The Ghost Town of Pamban Island!
So on my last trip to the birth city of Dr. Kalam - Rameshwaram (Rameswaram), I also happened to visit this ghost town situated on the Pamban Island. Ghost town, you ask why? In the year 1964, a devastating cyclone hit the island which wiped off almost the entire population of the town. It is believed that almost 1800 people lost their lives, including people on fishing vessels and an entire train carrying 115 people! After the calamity, the government declared the town of Dhanushkodi - a ghost town. Only what remains are the decapitated buildings that remind the visitors that there stood a bustling town, which connected to the Talaimannar city of Ceylon, lost to the ravages of the sea. A seaside town lost to vagaries of the sea god Remnants of the old railway station Dhanushkodi Now the only inhabitants of this ghost town are a few hundred fishermen that live by catching fishes and drinking sweet water by digging into the sand.
